Porong Sessions

Around half of all recorded music came from the inhabitants of Porong village; the administrative hub for the region.

The expedition arranged to use the old administrative building (the old Xiang) as a studio. However, it was quickly found that people's homes provided better acoustic conditions as well as a more relaxed recording environment.

More than 20 different people took part in the Porong sessions. Highlights include the milking songs (bri glu) of Pelma Chudron, the enthusiastic dances of Tzendru-la, and the complex, ever changing, shuffling steps of the group sessions.

Other wonderful musical moments include the bluesy damyen riffs of Ngawang on an old song claiming that while the Chinese can count, Tibetans can sing; and a twenty minute love epic sung question and answer.

The expedition hopes that the sessions were an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
